Faithful in Small Things
Are you so focused on big dreams that you disregard the small things?
I want to challenge you with the thought that the small things in life are the big things. Being faithful over the small stuff isn't something we think about frequently, especially those of us with big dreams. When our vision doesn't match reality, we may be led to react in a way that’s quite the opposite. Perhaps we feel that what we can do won't make a significant difference. So, we choose to do nothing.
Starting a business has been an aspiration for years. Rather than take action, you catch yourself saying, “Not now, I’ll take a chance when I’m more financially stable.”
Writing a book and pursuing public speaking is your dream. Rather than follow true desires of your heart, you remind yourself, “One day, but not now. I’m not ready. I have too much to do. I’ll pursue dreams when life is more organized.”
Spending quality time with family has always been a personal goal. Instead, you work long hours every day. You justify time away by saying, “I’m working hard for the family. I want us all to have a better future. I’ll dedicate more time after I get a promotion.”
Unfortunately for many of us, these scenarios are far too familiar. Small seeds of greatness get pushed down by responsibility and worry. The tendency is to push things off until tomorrow, next year or some unknown timeframe.
Perhaps you feel you have all the time in the world. You may think you’re too young, too old, too inexperienced or that you have too much experience. Maybe you believe that you lack financial stability. You may want to get on the right career path, get married or start a family.
It’s true that you have responsibilities. Maturity and growth will help with your pursuits. Experience is a great teacher, but take caution with a pattern of thinking centered around perfect timing. Such a mindset will set you on a path of going in circles. Fear of making a mistake or not being ready may stop you from moving forward altogether.
If you want to pursue a path or calling, there’s no better time than the present to start. The following reminders are helpful for me. I hope they benefit you as well.
1. Be thankful for where you are right here right now.
2. Be faithful in every area of life.
3. Do what you can with what you've been given, even if what you can do seems insignificant.
4. If you have a bigger vision, start by taking small steps.
5. Make sure that the action you commit to is both attainable and challenging.
6. Consistency is key. Take action every day and stick to it.
7. Enjoy the journey as you head to your destination. Make the most of today.
If you wait to feel 100% ready or until circumstances are perfect, the right moment will never come. Have a big vision, but don't just dream. Focus on what you can do today. The plan will unfold as you move forward. If faithful in the small things, little by little you'll build the courage to step into the big things.
