Balance Your Goals
If you have a vision, you're accustomed to thinking about goals. The challenge is to determine the best course of action. Responsibilities and priorities compete for your time. Finding a healthy balance is essential. Once found, do whatever it takes to Inspire Yourself to Action.
Creating a clear plan of action is key to your success. It should include short-term, mid-term and long-term goals. But, Why not focus on one goal at a time?
If that works for you, great. I find that it's easier to stay motivated if I diversify my projects. I tend to be most productive when I set aside time for goals with varying timeframes for completion.
I used to focus on one objective at a time. I felt that this would make me more efficient. But I was actually less effective. If a goal was long-term, I got caught up in it. This was done in an attempt to finish quickly. Slow progress led to discouragement, and I promptly lost momentum.
While writing my first book, I was utterly one tracked. For the first three years, I arduously worked on it day in and day out. It was a challenge to stay motivated because it took months to complete a chapter. At the end of each section, I felt mentally exhausted. This made it even harder to pick the project back up to start again.
Although writing was my passion, it turned into sheer drudgery. Had I mixed up my routine, I believe I would have finished more quickly. I can't say for sure. But I'm confident the process would have been more efficient.
At times, I was wholly focused on short-term goals and projects. While I enjoyed the satisfaction of completion, I didn't feel challenged. This made it difficult to focus on longer-term projects. In fact, I put some on hold for months or even years.
My current schedule includes a balanced combination of short, mid and long-term goals. I don't focus on all of them at once. But I do set aside a little time for all of them on a regular basis. Occasionally, an urgent project takes precedence over others. In this case, I work through goals based on priority.
Perhaps your ultimate goal is to run a marathon. You follow a strict routine, but your training program varies daily. Your schedule is broken down into short runs, long runs, cross training and rest days.
Now imagine following the same regimen day in and day out. This would result in a lack of preparation, injury or burn out. The same thing happens if you work on goals like you're running a marathon. If you do too much of anything, even a good thing, it turns into a bad thing.
In conclusion, discover what works for you and stick to it. Maintain a healthy balance. Challenge yourself, but create a plan that leads to a sense of accomplishment. Even the smallest step deserves recognition. You'll enjoy the journey as you celebrate small successes along the way.
